download: TRAVIS RYAN (Cattle Decapitation singer) / DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS
The long out-of-print TRAVIS RYAN / DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS split CD is now available for digital download @ http://chromepeelerrecords.bandcamp.com/album/travis-ryan-death-by-a-thousand-cuts

One of the more interesting pairings of harsh, electronic horror, upstart noise duo Death By A Thousand Cuts team up with CATTLE DECAPITATION vocalist Travis Ryan to transmit an hour of grim, nightmarish drone noise. Travis Ryan's four tracks open the disc with an edgy, paranoid ambience that mixes environmental buzzes and electronic hum with blurry theremin melodies and hushed buzzsaw tones, evoking the faint but discernible hum of electricity you feel when standing at the edge of an urban landscape in the middle of the night. Occasionally Ryan's droning dread lurches into a staticky overload that recalls the chopped up circuit burn of John Wiese, but more often drifts through a halogen-lit dreamworld similar to a grittier, urban take on Glass Throat Records atmospherics.

The other side of this split is haunted by Death By A Thousand Cut's nightmarish free electronic designs. DBATC's industrial hallucinations are conjured from noxious bass sinewaves and cloudy keyboard drones, curling upwards out of metal-on-metal carnage and blasts of laser-beam effects pedal violence, and the music becomes strangely beautiful, especially with the cosmic, Troum-meets-Bastard Noise insectoid frequencies of the final track "Approach Of The Black Claw".

STILL AVAILABLE from Chrome Peeler Records:
Unearthly Trance / The Endless Blockade "split" LP (doom vs. power violence)
Merzbow / The Guilt of... "split" LP (Japanese noise legend vs. EYEHATEGOD side project)
Mike IX Williams "That's What the Obituary Said" 7"+poster (EYEHATEGOD vocalist)

We just recorded what is probably the most *IMPORTANT* record I have ever been a part of. It is a record of our times, of our situation, a record that presents hope and laughter in the face of absolute despair, a record that advocates getting tough and getting through it, because you CANNOT stop the signal. We in Victory and Associates recorded a HELL ASS ROCK RECORD.

And for some reason LJ won't let me link to the awesome/ridiculous fake press conference we made before recording it, but it's at: http://www.thesethingsarefacts.com

We have a goal of $5,000, seems like a lot, but it isn't. That's exactly how much it will cost to put out on a 180 Gram Vinyl with a gatefold cover by Mackie Osbourne. Yup. Gatefold cover, like Led Zeppelin or something. Yes, this is a ballsy move, we're also $1K towards the goal.

It sounds fantastic, which I know, pretty much means nothing from me (a dude in the band), and since it's not done being mixed I can't prove it yet. When people deign to buy music these days it is always, and I mean ALWAYS, after previewing it first. But I guarantee you, this record is worth your time and your belief.

We made a great record and http://www.thesethingsarefacts.com, Help us put it out won't you?

FINAL SOLUTION "All New Power" (90s NYC power-electronics)
Due to the FINAL SOLUTION "All New Power" cassette selling out in 3 days, the digital version is now available @

About the release:

CPR-14: FINAL SOLUTION "All New Power"
Re-issue of impossible to find 1990 demo from NYC power electronics legends. FINAL SOLUTION created some of the most raw and intense power electronics ever. They could be compared to "Great White Death" era WHITEHOUSE, but they really emit a hard New York ugliness that only an American-born group could bring.

Unearthly Trance / Wooden Wand "Manson" 7"
Unearthly Trance / The Endless Blockade "split" LP
Merzbow / The Guilt of... "split" LP

Introducing The Band
What with the recent and suspiciously abrupt demise of the Birds, I've had to rearrange my fave bands list a little. Everyone moves up one; a vacancy is created for a new fave band.

I think my new fave band might be this lot. Here's a video featuring Phoenix Catscratch, from Athens, Greece, performing their hot new hit Ed. Or ED. Sometimes, the song title seems to be written entirely in upper case, so I have no idea if it's Ed as in Edward, or ED as in (say) Electronic Diagnosis.

But then, many things about Phoenix Catscratch are a mystery - not least, what the blimmin' heck they're on:

A bit like X-Mal Deutschland, Malaria and the Sixteens meeting in a bucket of ART, don't you reckon? Klaus Nomi tops the pictorial influence list on the band's MySpace page, and I think you can tell, can't you?

ED (or Ed) is not the band's most accessible song by any means ('You don't say!' I hear you cynically snort). For a possibly easier way in to the world of Phoenix Catscratch, try 'Denim Hunger', the top song on the band's MySpace player. That one actually has a guitar riff, and is dangerously close to yer actual rock 'n' roll.

But I think the factor that will probably make or break Phoenix Catscratch - the element of the band that you'll either love or hate - is the voice of the female singer, Valisia. Her strange drawl almost sounds like an upper-class English accent, as if the band had recruited a Pimms-fuelled Etonian fop to handle the vocal chores. In the end I think the voice will become strangely addictive, although I'm willing to concede this might just be me.

On one thing there can be no argument, however: Valisia's looming mutant quiff (the 'Sideways Eraserhead', I think it's called down at the Vidal Sassoon salon) is a work of art in itself.

As far as I know the band have not played live outside Greece yet, although within Greece they seem to be picking up some decent gigs - they supported S.C.U.M last week. But there's a possibility that they may come to the UK before too long. Velvet Magazine, essentially Greece's equivalent to Artrocker mag in the UK, is currently running a 'vote for your fave band' type competition, and the prize is a London gig under the auspices of Artrocker. Phoenix Catscratch are among the contenders.

In a way, that seems a bit of an odd prize - "Nominate your favourite band and we'll make them leave the country!" - but if it means we get to see Phoenix Catscratch, hey, I'm in. I have registered myself on the Velvet mag site (which means I'm logged in to a website entirely written in a language I can't read) and I've ticked the box for Phoenix Catscratch. If you feel that way inclined, please do likewise, and collectively we'll shamelessly rig the vote express genuine international support for the band.

And I'll see you down the front, dodging the flailing mutant quiff. What more, I ask, could you want?

Nemesis To Go issue 8 is up
The new issue of my webzine, Nemesis To Go, is up now and ready to eat.

It's a big cake, and it's got lots of wholesome ingredients, and only a few harmful chemicals. It contains plenty of post-punkers, art-punkers, and a few plain old punkers. Sundry dispatches from the front line of London's new new wave and beyond...

This banner gives you the visual version. Click it to go to the zine:

As ever, if you find any broken links or other glitches, let me know and I'll sort 'em out.

Spread the word, Thunderbird.
